Surf in Drake Bay

Drake Bay is probably one of the most remote locations of Costa Rica; set on northern part of the Osa Peninsula, it is surrounded by an incredible abundance of wildlife and tropical flora, together with a wide choice of accommodations and friendly people. Drake Bay has a river mouth break that offers awesome waves that work even better with a southwest swell. This spot is however only accessible by boat, adding even more adventure to your trip.

Travel Adventure and Great Surf

Those seeking a combined adventure and great surf will not be disappointed in Drake Bay. To reach the best spot, you need to get on a boat that will take you to several areas of long and powerful waves and swells. Usually, estuaries are full of fish, which often means that crocodiles are present so you need to stay vigilant. You will easily find a boat captain in Drake Bay who can take you on to your surfing adventure; indeed you may well be the only one as there are few visitors in this region.

No waves? Plenty to do while you wait

While you wait for the waves there is plenty to do in this incredible region. The pristine beaches are gorgeous, and the mysterious rainforest is right there. Corcovado is the place that has the most biodiversity on earth and you are sure to discover a magnificent array of mammals, amphibians and reptiles as well as myriads of birds. You are right at the northern entrance of the Corcovado National Park so make sure you go and explore this wonder of the world; guides are plentiful and will help you make the most of your trip. Incidentally, the estuary of the Sierpe River has the largest mangrove ecosystem of the country.

Snorkeling and diving is also a must; the coral reefs are teeming with life, while this is also a great destination for dolphin and whales watching. If you like a bit of history, you will find it on Cano Island, close by offshore; huge pre-Columbian spheres carved out of stone, scattered around the island. Some scientists believe that the island was once used as a burial ground.
