Caño island is about 15 km away from the west coast of the Osa Peninsula coast.
This reserve was founded in 1978, Its land extension is about 300 hectares, and it protects about5,800 hectares of the sea sorrounding it.
The island is covered by humid tropical forest and it is home for more than 158 species of plants and 13 species of land birds. But the greatest variety of wild life is found in the sea sorrounding it, that has clear waters and beautiful coral reefs.
During the precolombian era the island was used by the Brunca indians as a cementery. There are still remains of these graves in the middle of the island that can be visited following the trails.
